Lewis Lee, one of our founders, with a passion for legal lexicography, also sought out a technology to allow lawyers to search the claims based on more than Boolean key-word search. With an emphasis on the semantics and polysemy associated with legal documents, Lewis identified an innovative technology developed by Bell Labs. This technology, known as LSI or latent semantic indexing, uses complicated mathematics and matrix decomposition (SVD) to identify similarities among documents. This allows you to enter an entire document (such as a product description, idea for a patent, etc.) and compare it to the universe of patents and patent applications—comparing across just the claims or the entire document.
